Why truck crashes are not ordinary car accidents
I-15 is the main freight corridor between Southern California and Salt Lake City, and it runs straight through the Las Vegas valley. US-95 and the 215 Beltway carry heavy delivery and construction traffic too. A loaded tractor-trailer can weigh 80,000 pounds, so injuries are often severe, and the claim involves companies, not just a driver: the motor carrier, the trailer owner, the shipper or loader, a maintenance contractor, and their separate insurers. Commercial policies are usually much larger than the $25,000 personal minimum covered in our Nevada accident guide.
Federal safety rules that matter
Interstate trucking is governed by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules on driver hours (49 CFR Part 395), vehicle inspection and maintenance, cargo securement and drug and alcohol testing. Violations of those rules, such as a driver over the hours limit or brakes overdue for service, can be strong evidence of negligence.
The data trucks record
Most modern trucks carry electronic logging devices and engine control modules that record speed, braking and hours of service. That data, plus dash-camera footage and dispatch records, can be lost or overwritten if no one asks for it to be preserved. Attorneys typically send a preservation letter to the carrier very early.
Common causes on Las Vegas roads
Fatigue on long overnight runs from Los Angeles, unsafe lane changes in construction zones, wide right turns in commercial districts, tire blowouts in summer heat, and shifting loads all appear in truck cases here. Delivery vans and box trucks in residential neighborhoods cause a different pattern: backing crashes, double-parking and rushed schedules. Each points to different records worth requesting.
When the trucking company calls you first
Carriers often have rapid-response teams that reach the scene, and their adjusters may call quickly with an early offer. Before you sign anything, it helps to understand how large commercial policies work and whether the offer accounts for future treatment. Our FAQ covers recorded statements and early offers.
Injuries and damages
Truck crashes cause spinal injuries, fractures, traumatic brain injuries and long recoveries. Damages can include medical bills now and later, lost wages and earning capacity, and pain and suffering. Nevada's comparative fault rule (NRS 41.141) still applies, and so does the two-year deadline for injury lawsuits (NRS 11.190(4)(e)), though an attorney will usually want to move well before then because of the evidence issues above.
Next steps
If you or a family member was hurt in a truck crash anywhere in the valley, from North Las Vegas to Henderson, you can request a free review through the enquiry form or by calling (725) 212-4114.
